3 Essential Tips To Prepare Your Home Outdoor Space for Winter

Share

While winter may bring frigid temperatures and inches of snow in some parts of the country, it doesn’t have to stop you from spending time outdoors.

You can still participate in the backyard activities you love—such as grilling and enjoying bonfires—even in the winter. Just make sure you use these tips to prepare your home outdoor space for winter.

1. Choose a Protected Area for Your Grill

Even when the snow starts to pile up, you can still utilize your outdoor grill! You just need to have the right strategies and cooking techniques. Start by choosing a dry, covered location for your outdoor grill. You should store it under a protective cover or tarp in a spot that is most protected from the wind.

2. Cover Your Fire Pit

Having an outdoor fire in the winter is a fantastic way to enjoy the peacefulness of the season and stay warm. However, you don’t want to have to empty the snow out of your fire pit before every use, so keep your campfire covered when you’re not using it.

Snow will also collect on exposed wood piles, so be sure to cover your bonfire fuel with a cover or tarp in the winter to keep it dry. You may also want to invest in fire pits with protective walls, such as smokeless fire pits, so winter winds don’t extinguish your fire or blow smoke in your face.

3. Seal Your Patio Before It Snows

The winter season can wreak havoc on stone, concrete, and masonry patios. The snow, ice, and salt can react with your patio materials and cause cracking, erosion, and other damage in the spring.

To prevent unnecessary damage to your patio, consider scheduling a seal application before the weather makes this process impossible. Wait for a mild day to schedule a seal application or apply the coating yourself.

Just because the winter brings cold weather and layers of snow doesn’t mean you should spend all of the season cooped up indoors. Ready your home’s outdoor porch or patio space with these tips to prepare for winter weather.
