3 Forgotten Home Safety Tips You Need To Follow

Share

A big home has a lot of heavy walls, dangerous electronics, and scary appliances. Small home mistakes can present big problems, but most people know how to avoid common home dangers such as slipping hazards in bathrooms and loose rugs on staircases.

However, many forget a few areas of the home that can be equally hazardous. Read on to learn some forgotten home safety tips you need to follow.

1. Don’t Mix Cleaning Chemicals

One safety tip many can easily forget is that you shouldn’t mix cleaning chemicals. Still, many on social media have recently tried to deep-clean sinks and toilets by mixing several chemicals in a trend known as “product overload.” These homeowners combine multiple cleaning products to theoretically achieve the best clean possible, which can create many unsafe solutions. In your home, you should never mix:

  • Bleach and vinegar
  • Bleach and ammonia
  • Bleach and rubbing alcohol
  • Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar
  • Bleach and toilet bowl cleaner

There are many other cleaning solutions you shouldn’t mix, but these are the main combinations that can be harmful. You should keep a clean home, but always use one product at a time.

2. Mind Your Electronics

More and more electronics enter the home every day. While most manufacturers rigorously test their products to ensure they are safe, that doesn’t mean you can leave them and forget about them.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends unplugging electrical devices when not in use because even when the device is off, it can start fires or shock someone.

Similarly, you cannot leave things like an electric fireplace on all day. They aren’t as dangerous as leaving a wood-burning fireplace roaring all day, but they can still be hazardous. An electric fireplace can start an electrical fire or heat something close to the fireplace enough to combust. Keep electronics unplugged when not in use and monitor electronics throughout the day.

3. Declutter Your Home

This safety hazard is less something people forget and more something they overlook. Almost every homeowner knows they should keep their home clutter-free because it makes the space look and feel better. However, clutter can also present a tripping hazard.

A simple loose toy or suitcase on the floor can create many unwanted problems. You don’t need to keep a spotless home, but by being proactive, you can protect yourself and others from these dangerous tripping hazards.

You need to follow these home safety tips to ensure that your home is as safe as possible and grant yourself peace of mind. You want to live in a safe home, and to achieve that, you’ll need to go out of your way to do some maintenance here and there. However, the effort is well worth it when you know that you and your family are safe in your home.
