While this type of fencing is excellent for homeowners and business managers alike, not many know how to take care of their materials properly. Let’s examine the important maintenance for your wrought iron fence.

1. Clean Regularly

A great way to prevent costly repairs to your wrought iron fence is to clean it regularly. But this does not mean just loosely wiping it down now and then! You must use soap and water to remove dirt, rust spots, and any other particles that might damage your fence if left for a certain amount of time.

For example, try using a wire brush or hard sponge to brush away damaging rust, rinse it carefully, and apply a rust converter or primer to turn iron oxides into a protective chemical layer.

If you find corrosion on your wrought iron fence, be sure to have a plan in place to take care of it right away to prevent further damage.

Taking care of rust spots and other harmful debris early on is an excellent way to maintain your fence correctly to make it last longer.

2. Repaint Annually

Although wrought iron fencing can withstand various weather conditions, it can still face damage if left alone without consistent maintenance.

Be sure to apply paint to your fencing annually to provide continued protection for your fence throughout the different seasons.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to choose a paint specifically made for wrought iron materials to prevent chemical damage. For example, you might consider oil-based paints and primers to add proper protection to your fencing.

3. Inspect Hardware

Besides the appearance of the wrought iron fence, taking care of the hardware materials is just as important.

While wrought iron fencing is naturally durable, try inspecting the components during your annual repaint to ensure it’s still functional.

For instance, there might be loose screws, damage to the foundation, dents in the iron, and more. Take a look at the most used areas of the fence and repair the damaged elements.

Once you understand the factors of important maintenance for your wrought iron fence, you’ll be able to better care for your fencing so it can protect your property for years.
