3 Items That You Shouldn’t Store in the Garage

Share

Although their original purpose was to protect our cars from the elements, garages have shifted over time to store our extra stuff. In most people’s three-car garages, at least one bay is frequently full of everything, it seems.

Garages are convenient for allowing us to hold onto rarely used items instead of getting rid of them and buying new ones (like seasonal decorations). They help store camping gear, bikes, and clothes we’ve grown out of. However, there are three items that you shouldn’t store in the garage. It’s time to find some room for these in the house!

1. Food

We all love a good deal on perishables, so we may stock up on these items when they go on sale. However, the garage is not a space for food. Fluctuating temperatures and humidity conditions can spoil even canned food over time.

Pests and rodents that may carry bloodborne diseases are more likely to gain access to food when it’s in the garage compared to a pantry or cupboard in the house. You should also keep wine out of the garage. Keep your bottles inside, especially those that were gifts or that you splurged on! The changing temperatures can alter the wines’ flavors.

2. Anything in Cardboard Boxes

What would you think if you were a cockroach or a spider looking for some shelter? A cardboard box is one of the first places that pests seek out. Such boxes are too breathable, and the changing environment can impact anything stored in them.

When you do put things in the garage, you should place them in sealable plastic totes instead.

3. Propane Tanks

A garage seems like the perfect place for storing propane tanks, right? No. The possibility of ignition (although low) is way too risky to take a chance on. In a garage that’s probably already too cluttered, storing propane tanks is a bad idea. Additionally, if any amount of leaking occurs, these fumes can build up in the garage. Then, a single spark could blow up the garage in a second.

By being aware of these items that you shouldn’t store in the garage, you can protect your family and home from any unnecessary risks.
