3 Top Causes of Increased Household Energy Consumption

Share

When your energy expenses go up, so might your level of stress. Many people dread receiving their gas and electric bills each month, but you don’t have to let these expenses control your life.

As long as you know what’s causing your bills to skyrocket, you can make proactive changes to reduce your costs. With that in mind, here are the top causes of increased household energy consumption.

1. Not Turning Off Your Lights and Ceiling Fans

Although your lights and ceiling fans might not seem like they use that much energy, the costs can quickly add up when you leave them on 24-7. In addition, you don’t need a ton of light to increase the brightness of your room.

The most efficient way to light up a room is to use lamps for specific areas, such as near your furniture or next to your bed. The same is true for your fans—you can lower your energy consumption by using box fans in specific areas.

2. Forgetting To Change Your HVAC Filter

Let’s face it: during the winter, you need heat if you live in a cold area. However, heaters can eat up your finances if you aren’t careful, so look out for too much heat expenditure in your home. One way you can make your HVAC system work more efficiently is by changing out your air filter at least once per month.

If your HVAC system relies on a reusable filter, wash it out thoroughly before putting it back in. Saving money on your energy bills highlights the importance of a clean furnace filter, so be sure to schedule a regular replacement or cleaning for your filter.

3. Using Old Appliances

Older appliances don’t use electricity as efficiently as newer ones. If your dishwasher, refrigerator, or washing machine is more than 25 years old, it’s time to replace it with a more efficient machine.

Although newer appliances might cost more up-front, you’ll save money in the long run thanks to lower energy expenses. Furthermore, if you ever decide to sell your home, newer appliances will boost your home’s resale value.

Overall, energy bills are the bane of many a homeowner’s existence, but they’re necessary evils. Now that you know some of the top causes of increased household energy consumption, you can make critical changes in your household habits to lower your monthly expenses.
