4 Essential Winter Maintenance Tips for Your Hot Tub

Share

You don’t want the hot tub you used all summer long to receive no attention during the winter. If you decide to keep your hot tub open during these cold months of the year, continue reading these essential winter maintenance tips for your hot tub!

1. Hot Tub Cleaning

Hot tubs require regular maintenance, and you should deep clean them four times a year. Before the temperatures are very cold, clean the hot tub one more time and restart the cleaning schedule in the new year.

Some easy hot tub maintenance tips will help you through the process, like draining all the water before cleaning. Remember to avoid harsh sanitizing products and instead try water and a little vinegar or mild soap to scrub away dirt and residue.

2. Freeze Protection

Around your home, watch out for plumbing pipes freezing during the wintertime. The same goes for your hot tub! The pipes of a hot tub start to freeze when they endure a few days consistently under 28 degrees Fahrenheit. But as long as the warm water is pumping and circulating, you won’t need to worry about this problem!

Freeze protection uses an air temperature sensor to detect when the air is too cold. Once it detects a low temperature, the warm water will pump through the jacuzzi jets to avoid freezing. If you don’t have freeze protection, program the hot tub to cycle once per hour during cold weather.

3. Keep It Covered

Anytime the hot tub isn’t in use, keep a cover on top. When you leave the open hot tub exposed to the winter weather, you encounter many risks: snow, water freezing over, dirt, debris, and contaminating the water. Keep a cover over the surface of the hot tub to trap heat, and simply remove it whenever you decide to use it again!

4. Stock Up on Equipment

You might think that since it’s wintertime, the water won’t get contaminated. Bacteria and other microorganisms can thrive in a warm hot tub. Stock up on necessary equipment like:

  • pH Increaser
  • pH Decreaser
  • Sanitizer
  • Shock
  • Test Strips

These items are vital to keeping your hot tub functioning safely for its next use!

When the time comes to use your hot tub this winter, you’ll already know all about the essential winter maintenance tips to keep your hot tub in excellent shape!
