Remodeling a kitchen requires a lot of time, planning, and effort from your hired contractors to make your dream come true. Sometimes those efforts can result in costly mistakes.

Have a smooth transition into your brand-new space by avoiding these mistakes when remodeling your kitchen.

1. Making Walkable Areas Too Small

You should have enough room in your kitchen to maneuver comfortably. Making the kitchen aisles too small will make it difficult for you and a helping hand to navigate around the kitchen. When designing your new kitchen, ensure all passageways between walls, islands, and appliances are wide enough to walk through comfortably.

2. Not Adding Dimension to the Room

Your kitchen should be beautiful but also functional and practical. Consider the direction and size of your appliances, cabinets, and doors when designing the space. Take a walk through the kitchen and plan door openings to prevent a cramped kitchen. You should measure your fridge and oven to ensure that you have enough space for all your new gadgets and decorations.

3. Making Your Kitchen Island Too Big

You want to pick out an island that is the appropriate size for your kitchen so it doesn’t look too big and awkward. In a big kitchen, you likely have room to spare.

However, it’s a common mistake to squeeze a supersized island in a smaller kitchen when remodeling. It’s hard to utilize and walk around a kitchen island that’s far too big for the room.

4. Not Planning for Additional Storage Space

One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when remodeling your kitchen is failing to add storage space. When remodeling, it’s easy to get lost in upgrading appliances, hardware, and floors, but don’t forget about additional storage space!

When adding storage space, usually in the form of cabinetry, think about the look you’re trying to achieve.

Design Tip: If you want a more modern look, choose glass door cabinets!

5. Making Impulsive Changes to the Original Design

Get all your ducks in a row before the kitchen remodel process begins. Delays and changes to the original blueprint can slow down the process and be very expensive. Think about your material choices and considerations ahead of time. Do your homework and make your choices before the process begins to cut down on mishaps.
