9 Things to Plan & Prepare For Moving to a New Home

Share

You have finally signed the paperwork on your new home. Congratulations! You are undoubtedly very excited to move into your new place and start your life there. The excitement starts to wear off as soon as you begin thinking of packing boxes, bubble wraps, checklists, and moving companies.

Preparing for moving to your new home is undoubtedly chaotic, and it feels more so when you’re doing it for the first time. However, there is nothing to panic if you just plan and prepare for it the right way. And, here you will get a couple of tips that will help you out in doing just that.

Let’s get started!

1. Create a Detailed Checklist of All Your Belongings

Your first job is to take stock of all the things that you want to take with you. Note down every item that has to be packed to move to the new place. It will help you in two ways. Firstly, this way you will not leave behind anything important at your old house by mistake.

Secondly, you will be able to de-clutter your place and take only the necessary things. Ask yourself whether or not you’ll need that item at your new home. If the answer is no, donate the item to charity before moving.

2. Manage Packing in an Efficient Manner

Now that you have a list of the items that you want to move, start packing all the goods. You can use cardboard boxes too, but nowadays, many companies let you rent reusable boxes that they collect back after you’re done unpacking.

It is an eco-friendly approach to reduce wastage. Do not plan to pack the boxes only on the weekends because that would be too hectic. A better idea is to pack one or two boxes every day to distribute the load evenly.

3. Make Sure To Hire a Moving Company Right on Time

You should not wait until the last minute to hire the best moving companies because it needs a fair bit of research and deliberation. All moving companies are not equal in terms of experience, rates, and even services offered.

Start taking moving companies quotes at least a month before your moving date. Talk to the representatives of at least three to four companies to know if they are offering what you’re looking for.

4. Find Out Ways to Make it Easier to Say Goodbye

A house is more than just bricks and walls. It has been your home for so many years, and you have memories attached to it, which makes it hard to say goodbye. But, you will have to brace yourself for the moving day beforehand.

You can try maintaining a diary where you note down all the plans you have for your new home. Write about how you want the kid’s room decorated or the plants you want in the balcony.

5. Do Not Delay in Switching Your Utilities

You know you need to switch the utilities, but the important thing is to get the timing right. It is crucial to place a call to the utility companies for the service switch as soon as you know the closing date.

It is even more significant if you are moving to a previously vacant place or is newly made. You need to arrange the maintenance call for reestablishing services in time.

6. Pack A Separate Kit For Moving Essentials

Keep in mind that you will not be able to unpack everything in a day or two. So, the things that you will need immediately after moving to the new place will have to be packed in a separate box.

Here is a list of things that should go in the moving essentials kit:

  • Keys
  • First-aid kit
  • Chargers
  • Toiletries
  • Spare batteries
  • One set of clothing

You should carry this box with you in the car, instead of loading it in the mover’s truck.

7. Finish up Your Food before the Moving Date

Make it your aim to not waste food before moving to your new home. Transporting food is very messy, and thus, not advisable. You can still carry boxed and canned foods, but nothing else.

You will have to empty your freezer and fridge beforehand.

A good way of doing that is to plan your meals. Focus on emptying your stock, instead of replenishing it, a week before moving. You can get back to replenishing your food stock after you reach your new place.

8. Meet Up and Be Familiar with Your Neighbors

Having a good relationship with the neighbors will make the transition go a lot easier. Take the first steps to break the ice by introducing yourself to them before moving in.

Inform your neighbors about the move-in date and ask them for tips about the parking and other details about the area. Taking some baked goodies with you at the time of saying hello would help to break the ice even faster!

9. Explore and Discover Your New Neighborhood

The neighbors will give you tips, but you will have to explore the place and see things for yourself. Take a walk around the area and introduce yourself to people who pass you by. There is nothing a friendly smile and a warm handshake can’t win over, right?

You will get to know more about the neighborhood shops, babysitters, handymen, and more this way. Besides, you are going to settle down at the place and have a life there. Exploring the place will help you settle down in the new neighborhood more easily.

Takeaway

Moving will feel less stressful if you have these nine things planned and sorted beforehand. It might feel worrisome at the beginning, but as you keep marking things off your checklist as per our suggestion, you will notice that it gets easier to manage everything. Your move to your new home will be smooth and hassle-free. Relax, take a deep breath, start preparing, and don’t worry. You’ve got this!
