When it comes to preventing pipe issues, consider the following best ways to keep your pipes from clogging. These tips will help protect your kitchens and bathrooms from developing costly drainage issues.

1. Snake the Drain

Drains sometimes clog due to hair. The first step is to check the drain stopper. This will show any loose hairs or debris that is clogging the drain. Then, clean and reassemble it. If the drain still clogs, use a plumbing snake.

A plumbing snake is an invaluable tool designed to remove large debris or hair. Simply push the snake down the drain and twist. It’ll grab hair and other blockages to clear the drain.

2. Clean the Drains Once a Week

You should clean your drains once a week. Rinse any stoppers before reinstalling them. Ensure you clean your kitchen, tub, and shower drains.

Don’t be afraid to use a bacterial drain cleaner. They’re biodegradable and non-corrosive, so they won’t damage your pipes. Using a bacterial drain cleaner once a month prevents future issues from developing.

3. Avoid Flushing Certain Items

People often flush miscellaneous items down their toilets or sinks. Only certain items should go down the drain. For instance, keep solid foods, coffee grounds, and grease out of kitchen drains. They’ll clog the drains and lead to issues that may require a professional plumbing service.

Also, only flush toilet paper down the toilet. While flushable wipes may tempt you, they can damage your plumbing system. Always toss hygiene products in the trash can.

4. Consider Using Drain Screens

If your sink doesn’t have a garbage disposal, consider using a drain screen. Using a drain screen is one of the best ways to keep your pipes from clogging. Drain screens fit over drain openings to prevent food, hair, and other debris from flowing down the drain.

Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and other sinks, drain screens are an affordable solution that can prevent plumbing issues.
