Concealed doorways have become extremely popular with homeowners today. Apparently, having Halloween-type features in a house is the latest fad in the real estate market, and a concealed door is a must have. Even those who are in the market for new homes are interested in buildings that have concealed doors.

Concealed Doorways: What You Need To Know

Even real estate agents have noted that an open house is likely to attract more interested parties if it has a concealed doorway listed as one of its features. As it seems, people are not satisfied with just the size of the property, or the number of bedrooms available in the house; they want secret doorways that open to reveal another room, plus other special features.

Purpose

While secret doors were ideally meant for security purposes, now they are being installed for fun or for adding aesthetic appeal to a house, and they are a serious consideration for home design ideas. In fact, according to many home owners, secret doorways provide a solution to many design problems, and are a good use of space. The secret doors are typically concealed by mirrors, bookcases, a panel, artwork, and when opened, they reveal a secret room.

Costs

Concealed doorways are not expensive, that is if you are considering having one installed in your house. Depending on your budget, you can have the fancy ones installed quite easily, provided you have the designs for them and you need them to be customized. There are those that come pre-hung and ready to be installed. Pre-hung means they are already mounted on a frame, so all you need to do once they are delivered to you is to install them on your doorway. Their prices range from $850 to $1750. The good thing about them is that they can be installed virtually anywhere, since they provide a lot of space. For instance, you can open the wall and have a secret door installed there with much ease, and this is ideal for small home design.

You can also opt to have the concealed door delivered in a kit, which is actually cheaper than purchasing pre-hung secret doors. Therefore, if you are keen on saving money, the best alternative would be to acquire the secret door in a kit and use your interior design tools to fix it up. This way, it does not come pre-hung but arrives ready for you to construct and install it. It will still save you close to $350 if you bring in a contractor to do the assembly for you even if you factor in shipping costs.

Installation Ideas

If you are wondering where you can install the concealed door feature in your home, here are a few interior doorways ideas.

You can use them to gain access to your bedrooms. Imagine how interesting it would be for your guests not knowing where the entrance of your bedroom is? It would be fun appearing to them from behind the huge bookcase that’s at the corner of your living room, wouldn’t it? A bookcase as a secret entrance to your bedroom is a nice idea, considering that it will not only function as a door to your bedroom, but will also add to the aesthetic appeal of your living room.

Alternatively, you can also install one to cover the entrance to your bathroom. Better yet, you can have the doors to your bathroom closet hidden by a full mirror, and accessing the closet would only require you to swing the mirror to the side…interesting, don’t you think? There are many essential questions to ask yourself when planning your bathroom, but when it comes to having a concealed door on it is one question you definitely need to give a “Yes” answer to.

There are many home ideas for concealed doorways , and you can use home design apps for the best ideas. However, one of the perfect ways of using a conceal doorway is if you have a secret room for security or for storing away precious possessions that you wouldn’t want people to know about. In such a case, you can have a small space, or room, installed in your home and instead of the regular door with lock and keys, have a secret door in place. This way, no one will be able to access the room. Secret doors for your private room would work fine because the entrance to it will not be too obvious for everyone to see.

Do Concealed Doorways Add Any Value To The House?

While concealed doorways do add value to the aesthetics appeal of the home, they do not add any real value to the ‘cost’ of the house. If you are considering doing a renovation to a house you want to flip on the market, include concealed doorways features to attract more buyers but not to add the value of the property. Of course, with more buyers interested in the property, you might sell it for more money but the key word here is might. Ideally, many people will come see it on its open day, but that concealed doorway feature will not count in the real value of the property.

Conclusion

Therefore, having a concealed doorway in your home does increase the aesthetic appeal to it, plus it will show how creative you are at planning your living space. So, don’t hold yourself back anytime you want to renovate your home. If it is within your budget to have a concealed doorway, do it!
