5 Common Reasons Your Dryer Isn’t Working

Doing the laundry isn’t always fun, but it’s easier to do when your machines are working properly. If you notice that your clothes are not dry when you take them out of the dryer, you may have an issue that needs attention.

Here are five common reasons your dryer isn’t working.

1. Dirty Lint Screen

The first reason your dryer may not be working is a dirty lint screen. Airflow plays a crucial role in getting your clothes dry inside the dryer.

If something hinders the airflow from working as it should, it can cause your dryer to malfunction. A dirty lint screen can often be the culprit of improper airflow. Lint from your laundry builds up in the screen during each cycle, so you should clean the screen after each load to avoid this problem.

2. Overloaded Dryer

An overloaded dryer can also prevent laundry from drying. If you put too many items in your dryer at once, you overload its suggested capacity, causing unnecessary stress on its motor.

Luckily, you can easily avoid this particular problem by dividing your laundry into manageable loads and always adhering to your dryer’s suggested capacity.

3. Power Supply Issue

Your dryer won’t work if it does not receive the necessary power. Electric and gas-powered dryers can both experience power supply issues. To avoid this problem, ensure that you correctly connect your dryer to its power supply.

If it’s connected correctly but still not working, it could be an issue of loose wires, damaged cords, or bad connections and may require a repair or replacement.

4. Vent Obstruction

Another reason dryers may not work as they should is because of vent obstruction. The exhaust vent works to remove dirt, lint, and fumes from your dryer.

However, if something is obstructing or clogging the vent, it could cause problems for your machine’s overall functioning. Sometimes, it may just be a lint clog that needs cleaning, while other times, it may be that the vent is damaged and needs repair.

5. Issue With the Motor

An issue with the motor will also cause malfunctioning in your dryer. The motor is what powers the blower wheel to create airflow within the machine.

Dryer motors may experience wear and tear throughout the years and stop working as well as they did when your dryer was new. If you have a bad motor, it may be time to repair or replace it.

Now that you know the common problems causing your dryer not to work, the next step is deciding how to resolve the problem. You may need to repair or replace your dryer, so understanding the costs of a dryer repair vs. a dryer replacementwill help you determine which choice is right for you.
