How To Get More Use Out of Your Yard Space

When you first buy a home, you imagine all the fun possibilities both inside and out. After a while, though, reality can eclipse that vision. So you end up not using your home like you originally planned.

If you’re not using your yard space as much as you thought you would, you need to make some changes to your lifestyle or your yard’s functionality. Adjusting your yard can make it a better place to spend your time if you know what to do. Keep reading to learn how to get more use out of your yard space with some effective changes.

Add Shade

If your yard is uncomfortable to spend time in because the sun is always beating down, then you’ll never use it. The first step to using a hot yard more is to add shade. You can do this in multiple ways. Some people prefer to invest in landscaping since shady trees can help make your yard more comfortable and keep your house cooler.

Other people prefer to add shady structures to their homes, such as free-standing pergolas. Pergolas can go anywhere in your yard and turn a plain section of grass into a space where adults can relax and kids can play. No matter how you decide to add shade to your yard, you should do so as soon as possible. This way, you can start using it more and stay comfortable.

Create an Activity Space

Most of the time, yards are blank canvases. When you first bought your house, you probably thought the blank canvas was great, leaving plenty of room for landscaping and giving kids room to play. But sometimes, an empty yard just ends up boring us, and we don’t use the space at all.

To get more use out of your yard, create a dedicated activity space that will inspire household members and guests to get active. Put up a volleyball net, dig a few holes for mini golf, or just add a storage bin for easy access to frisbees and other outdoor toys.

Make a Focal Point

Maybe all your yard needs for you to use it more is a focal point that will inspire gathering. Most people try to create a functional focal point, such as a fire pit, to draw the eye and lead people to spend time around it.

But you can also have a purely aesthetic focal point like a fountain or stand-out landscaping arrangement. Whatever you choose, just ensure that the focal point makes you want to spend more time outside near it. That way, your yard will look better, leading you to use it more.

There are numerous ways to get more use out of your yard space. However, the best options are to add shade, create an activity space, and make a focal point. Shade, activities, and beauty will take your yard to the next level and inspire you to spend more time outside, which is the entire point of your yard.
