How To Get Rid of the Squeak in Your Door Hinges

Sometimes your home encounters structural issues that you need to repair. A squeaky door hinge is one of the most common issues in homes, and it may become irritating after you use the door numerous times.

Fortunately, there are simple ways to resolve the high-pitched noise, ensuring your door can function without any unnecessary sound.

What Causes the Squeak in a Door Hinge?

A squeaky door hinge usually occurs due to dirt and dust making their way in between the hinge and the hinge pin. Since both parts are metal, which typically lacks moisture or lubrication, friction will occur, and you’ll hear a squeak as the two metal pieces grind together.

The hinge may also suffer from rust due to exposure to oxidization after some time, which then causes more friction between metal parts.

Adding Oil

Oil is one of the most common substances used in mechanics and engineering to create lubrication and prevent friction. Various oils will eliminate the squeak in a door hinge, and given an oil’s viscosity, it will make its way between the cracks of the hinge and coat the inside well.

Olive oil will work better compared to cooking oils such as canola or vegetable oil and prevent any build-up.

Using Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly has numerous benefits for both human and non-human applications. This substance is a fantastic option for long-lasting lubrication and responds well to heat. Using petroleum jelly is an effective method for fixing the squeaky door hinge in your home.

You will only need a small amount in the spaces between the hinge, and since it sticks well to dry surfaces, you won’t need to worry about any runoff.

Utilize WD-40

For years, many people have relied on one useful product because of its lubricating abilities: WD-40. This product works on numerous mechanical parts, from door hinges to wheels, and it will greatly help you address your door’s squeaky hinges. Using WD-40 on other doors will also be effective in maintaining the home, as it works as an excellent tool for garage door maintenance throughout the year.

Listening to a squeaking door becomes a nuisance after a while. But with these methods and resources, you will experience silence when opening or closing a door in your home and enjoy the quality function of a good door hinge.
