How to Maintain Your Vintage Cabinet in the Kitchen

Vintage cabinets for your kitchen are an incredible option if you have to make a bold statement for the kitchen. Not only are they beautiful, but also appear classic. But many homeowners tend to shy away from using vintage kitchen cabinets. It is primarily because they feel that cabinets can be difficult to maintain.

A vintage cabinet for the kitchen can be a little expensive and also requires proper maintenance. This is the reason people avoid installing them.

But there is no need to worry. Sure, vintage-style kitchen cabinets are difficult to maintain, but it is not impossible.

Here are a few steps that will help you to maintain the vintage cabinets adequately.

Dust Regularly and Remove the Grease

You might already be aware that the longer you keep the cabinets dusty and sticky, the harder it will be to clean them. So, get a soft cloth to dust the vintage kitchen cabinets.

Experts recommend that you should dust and take off the grease at the end of every day to keep the vintage cabinet clean. Steam, as well as grease, can be difficult to avoid, especially if you cook a lot. The more you clean up the kitchen, the lesser you will let grease, dust, and steam settle on the surface. So, clean them regularly.

Be Proactive

If you want to maintain the color of the vintage kitchen cabinets, you have to be proactive.  Being proactive means considering every action as it can damage your kitchen cabinets.

For example, when you add oil to a pan and add your vegetables, the splatters can go unnoticed. However, if you have vintage white cabinets, make sure that you wipe them off instantly. If oil keeps accumulating on the surface, it can be very difficult to deal with in time to come.

Take Off the Grease

Over time, grease might build up in the kitchen. But your vintage light walnut kitchen cabinets can be highly affected by the deposition of grease. They are not just sticky but also pretty difficult to get rid of. If you cook often, grease deposition is natural. At times, you can’t really avoid it if you keep touching the cabinets with greasy hands or fingers.

Take a soft damp cloth and dip it in the wood cleaner to remove the layer of grease on the cabinets. But when you are removing grease from the cabinets, you have to be a little choosy about the cleaning products you are using.

You will find some cabinet cleaners in the market, which are not only harsh but can also have a damaging effect on the cabinet. Also, it is better if you don’t expose the vintage natural walnut cabinets to some toxic chemicals. Check the ingredients of the cleaner before you buy them to clean the cabinets.

Avoid Moisture

You shouldn’t always take the durability of the vintage kitchen cabinets for granted. Continuous short-term exposure to moisture, such as the splashing of water from the sink can result in damage.

Steam from crock pots or cooktops can also cause problems. You should wash away moisture from the surface as soon as you can to minimize the damage. Wood has the chance of absorbing excessive moisture and you need to make sure that you should dry out the wood.

Paying immediate attention to moisture will help in reducing the damage. It will also reduce the risk of mildew and mold.

Bottom Line

Set up the kitchen cabinets efficiently to prevent damage. Make sure that you are placing the heavier items in the lower cabinets, while the later ones are in the upper cabinets.  Clean them regularly to make sure they are in top shape.
