An outdoor space is a wonderful addition to any house providing owners with space to relax and spend time with the loved ones. Backyard, garden or patio is ideal for kids and pets to play, parties and family gatherings in the open. It’s a modest piece of nature in the middle of a busy city that provides comfort and joy for the occupants.

This is why it’s important to regularly clean this area and keep it tidy. Besides decluttering and occasional renovations, you need to be responsible when cleaning this space to preserve nature and keep it healthy. Using eco-friendly cleaning products is the key to nourish nature and avoid introducing toxic chemicals into your family’s life. So, here are some of the green ways to clean your outdoor space that will do just that.

A healthy way for window shine

Window cleaning products are not only aggressive but also not entirely necessary since there are natural and eco-friendly ways to keep them shining. A simple solution of vinegar and water will clean even the most dirties windows covered in oily and greasy stains. Baby shampoo or mild soap in the water will do the trick with the frames, just make sure to dry it right afterward.

Insect screens are easy to wash under the hose, or if removable, in the tub with a showerhead and you can do the same with blinds and shutters. Also, use vinegar on them and brush very gently to avoid causing any damage to the material and form. While paper towels are commonly used, turn to more sustainable resources like re-usable soft cloth but make sure it’s lint-free.

Unclog the gutters the right way

You may be tempted to use chemicals to dissolve dirt and dust in your gutters, but that could actually bring more harm than benefits. Remains of these products will stay in the gutters and corrode the metal until the rain falls and they are washed to your lawn, patio or garden. The simplest way to clean the gutters is with a pair of gloves and gently scraping the leaves and dirt with a spatula. After placing it all in a garbage bag, hose down the dirt between the seams and on the gutter walls.

Easy way to keep the patio clean

The first thing to do with any type of patio is to sweep it with a hard broom you use only for outdoors. Then, mix water and gentle soap for concrete and buy an eco-friendly cleaner for a wooden deck to avoid removing the varnish. If you sweep your patio daily, you will only have to wash it once a week during summer which is when you use it the most. For persistent stains, use a sponge or cloth and be gentle especially on the painted materials to not remove the coating or patterns.

Perfectly clean seating area at all times

No matter the awning and screens, the outdoor seating area gets easily dirty after rain or dusty from the winds and city rush. There are professional water pressure cleaning services that use eco-friendly products to clean flooring, façade, roof and even the toughest spots like cracks and between the boards.

If you want to clean the seating area, you can do this with a homemade mixture and scrubbing. For metal frames, mix a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide, a tablespoon of borax and a few drops of dish soap in warm water. Use organic or natural soap with warm water for bamboo furniture and a soft cloth to avoid causing any damage with harsh materials and chemicals. You can rub it with linseed oil every month to maintain its shine and use a gentle toothbrush for stains and mold.

Getting a fire pit and the grill ready

Firepit and grill are a bit more demanding since they can get persistently dirty. However, using aggressive and toxic chemicals will both harm the environment and your health. After all, this is where you prepare food and spend time seating around in the evenings. Baking soda and lemon juice are the most effective combination to dissolve the grease and clean your grill the healthy way. When it comes to the firepit, first remove the ashes and then use the same solution on the interior as for the grill.

In the end

Eco-friendly cleaning products may take more time to work, but will make your environment healthy and nourish nature. With the ingredients you have in your kitchen and assistance from professional cleaning services, your home will sparkle and shine in the best possible way for you and your family.
