Moving is the perfect time to bring out your clutter and decide what’s going to come with you when you set up your new place—and what you can get rid of during the process.

Learn what to do with unwanted stuff when moving and find a place for your unnecessary items, whether it’s in a new home or in the trash.
1. Donate It
You don’t have to keep an old vacuum cleaner or a well-loved chair just because it still works. If you don’t want it anymore but know that someone else might, drop it off at your local thrift store or charity shop.
The furniture and clothing you don’t need anymore can find loving homes with new owners.
2. Swap It
Check out social media hot spots such as Facebook for “buy nothing” groups. People swap items all the time; you could get a lovely Crockpot in exchange for the side table you’re not bringing to your new home.
3. Repurpose It
Decorate your new home with leftovers from the old one. If you don’t want your wooden bed anymore, use the headboard and create a “new” coat hanger or towel rack. You can also cut up old T-shirts and threadbare towels into handy rags for cleaning.
4. Toss It
Sometimes your old junk is just that: junk. If your dining room table is rickety or your easy chair makes you feel uneasy, chuck it out instead of donating it. When you set aside junk to be tossed out, rent a dumpster or hire a junk removal service to get it out of your way.
As you sift through your possessions when you’re moving to a new home, think about what to do with the stuff you don’t want anymore. Don’t feel guilty about getting rid of items that still work! Some of your old things can find loving homes.
You can transform some into new décor; and some really do belong in the trash. No matter where you’re sending your old things, think of what to do with unwanted stuff when moving as you look at each piece.
