Mildew and mold give your home a nasty odor, and more importantly, they can damage the health of those that inhabit the space. They can fester anywhere that is warm and damp.
As a result, they can pop in many unexpected spots. You should be aware of the unknown places where mold grows in your home so that you can identify any growing spores and remove them.
1. Window Seals
If you have any cracks where water leaks into your window, mold might sprout up along the window seal. This leakage can happen if you leave windows open during rainfall or on highly humid days. Once you invite moisture into a space, mold is soon to follow.
2. Areas Under Rugs and Carpet
If a rug ever becomes wet, it’s vital to set it out somewhere where air can flow on both sides. Otherwise, mold will grow on the underside. You can also fight against mildew by protecting your floor with a rug pad to help ventilate the air underneath the thick fabric.
3. Refrigerator Drip Pans
Many homeowners don’t even realize that there’s a drip pan in every refrigerator that catches falling condensation from the central area of the unit. These refrigerator drip pans can also collect bits of food, making them ideal spots for mold to grow. Clean out your pan at least once a year with water and vinegar. Do so even more frequently if the problem seems to be prevalent.
4. Air Conditioners
The cooling units on air conditioners can create lots of condensation, which can then encourage mold growth under the right conditions. That could be disastrous, as the spores may spread through the vents to the rest of the home.
5. Washing Machines
The majority of washing machines today open sideways. Therefore, the area around the door on your machine can collect stagnant water that doesn’t drain through the bottom vents. Consequently, mold can form there and negatively affect the washing machine’s ability to clean clothes. That’s why you should always leave your washer’s door open after using it so that it can air dry.
Understanding the unknown places where mold grows in your home is vital for ensuring that you can maintain a safe and healthy household.
